Heritage Day, also recognized as Braai Day, is an annual South African holiday celebrated on the 24th of September. This project entails the creation of an illustrated display font inspired by Jan Braai's recipes. The objective is to raise awareness of Braaidag within a specific target market by means of an interactive specimen poster and an editorial illustration spread.
National Braai Day initiatives were established in 2005, with the aim of uniting all South Africans around fires on the 24th of September each year. Jan Braai, an Afrikaans braai legend, is at the forefront of this organization. Jan Braai's mission is to bring South Africans together as a rainbow nation every year on Braai Day to celebrate their heritage, various cultures, and traditions. The goal is to inspire individuals to mark Braai Day with Jan Braai and generate excitement for the upcoming celebration.
The target audience primarily comprises Afrikaners who hold their culture and traditions in high regard and wish to share their heritage on National Braai Day.
An editorial illustration is featured alongside an article in an Afrikaans magazine, "Taalgenoot," which informs readers about Jan Braai's narrative and the forthcoming Braai Day.
To engage the audience, a specimen poster of a display typeface font is enclosed in the magazine. This poster can be folded into an A5 booklet that contains two of Jan Braai's recipes and a shopping list for the necessary ingredients. Each display font glyph represents an ingredient on the list. This encourages people to celebrate Braai Day with Jan Braai. The illustrated display font will employ a vibrant color palette with consistent saturation. The illustrations will adopt a lively and exciting tone to sustain the audience's interest. The illustrations will depict traditional Afrikaans foods featured in the recipes to bolster the concept of Braai Day.
